DARYA-I-NOOR The sixth largest diamond of the world, the Darya-I-noor (the sea of light) is the pride of Iran.It stands apart from its other famous ilk since one of its facets bears an inscription. "al-sultan sahib qiram Fath Ali Shah Qajar 1250"
it is another of those diamonds, which has repeatedly invited speculation about its origins and existence. indefatigable Jean-Baptiste Tavernier described a magnificent diamond, he called it the Great Table Diamond. But then like most famous diamonds, this too disappeared. Its existence however came to light when a group of gemmologists examined the crown jewels of Iran and discovered the Darya-I-noor as a cleavage of the Great Table Diamond. LIke the Koh-i-noor ,the Darya-I-noor too was brought to Iran from India by Nadir Shah. After Nadir Shah's assassination,it was held by the latter's blind grandson Shah Rukh, then it changed hands down to Alam Khan Arab Kuzayama and Mohammad Hasan khan Qajar and finally Karim Khan, the Zand ruler of Persia. The Darya-I-noor has mostly been worn as an armband by successive Zand and Qajar kings who ruled Persia. HOPE By all standards of comparison, for fame or infamy,no other jewel so captured the imagination as did the Hope Diamond and its predecessor the french blue. Truly it is the Queen of the court of Jewels. Many people also belive the Hope is the largest blue diamond in the world -- this isn't true though. it is actually the forth largest. It is however, the largest dark blue. The other are lighter shades. DRESDEN GREEN The Dresden Green gets its name from the capital of saxony where it has been on display for more than 200 years. The earliest known reference to its existence occurs in The Post Boy,a London news-sheet which in 1722 reported on a meeting between marcus moses,an important diamond merchant, and king George 1st,where he showed him a large diamond, "which is of a fine emerald green colour... It is said there never was seen like in Europe before, being free from any defect in the world... We hear the gentleman values it at 10,000 pond." ORLOV Mounted in the Imperial Sceptre made during the reign of Catherine the Great (1762-96),the Orlov is second to none in the collection of gems and jewellery amalled by the rulers of Russia. The unusual shape of the Orlov,as resembling half a pigeon's egg,the pattern of its facets and the presence of ablemish suggest that this diamond is indeed the long-last legendary stone - The great mogul, the Leviathan of all old indian diamonds. The Orlov was believed to be set as one of the eyes of an idol in a temple in South India. A french army deserter converted to hinduism, only so that he could gain access to the sanctun where the idol was placed. At an opportune moment, the frenchman prised one of the diamond eyes out of its socket. He sold it for 2,000 pond to an English sea Captain, who sold to a Jewish merchant for 12,000 pond. The merchant,in turn is said to have sold it to an armenian by the name of Khojeh Raphael. REGENT Originally known as the pitt, this 410-carat stone was one of the last large diamonds to be found in india. It was said to have been discovered by aslave in the Parteal mines on the Krishmna River about 1701. The slave concealed this enornous rough in the bandages of a self -inflicted legwound, and fled to the sea coast. There,he promised an English sea Captain half the value of the stone in return for safe passage to a free country. However temptation overtook the seafaring man and he murdered the slave and took the diamond .After selling it to an Indian diamond merchant named Jamchand for $ 5,000, the captain squandered the proceeds in dissipation, and in a fit of remorse and deliriun tremens, hanged himself. |
